About Native Pinon (Pinyon)
The Piñon tree grows all over the high deserts of the Southwest and Mexico. It is not as large as many conifers, growing from 10 to 30 feet tall. It has some unique characteristics. The pine nuts that come from the small pine cones are delicious. They are roasted and sold at road-side stands. The wood has a wonderful, distinctive sweet smell when it burns. The smell of burning Piñon wood is very distinct. Unfortunately, severe drought in New Mexico and Arizona has caused a bark beetle infestation, which has killed millions of Piñon & Ponderosa pine trees in just a few years.
